RD designs it perfectly, but the factory can't produce it? Common PCB design pitfalls and eCloud PCB's DFM alerts!
Veterans in the PCB design field, have you ever encountered this situation: the DRC (Design Rule Check) runs smoothly in the EDA software, but once the Gerber files are sent to the factory, the CAM engineer sends them back requesting modifications?
This isn't your fault! This is a common "communication gap" that occurs when moving from the "ideal world of design" to the "physical limits of manufacturing." Especially in small-batch, high-mix, rapid prototyping projects for printed circuit boards, even minor DFM errors can lead to delayed deliveries, or even entire batches being scrapped.
As a tech team that truly understands the pain points of R&D engineers, eCloud PCB has compiled a list of 6 common "hidden pitfalls" in PCB design, based on years of manufacturing experience. We hope this helps you avoid these pitfalls during the design stage itself, ensuring your circuit board project gets it right the first time!
This is the most common and easily overlooked pitfall!
Design software might allow you to draw extremely fine traces, but manufacturing equipment has its physical limits. If your design approaches or falls below the factory's process capabilities, the yield rate will drop significantly.
If inner layer copper traces are too close to the PCB's outline, they risk being cut or shorted during subsequent drilling or routing processes.
Drills and pads form the "3D structure" of a PCB, involving mechanical processing, which makes them more prone to issues.
For multilayer boards, the copper ring (Annular Ring) around a via must have sufficient width to ensure the drill doesn't break outside the pad during drilling, causing an "open circuit."
Silkscreen is the text layer on a PCB used for component identification. However, if silkscreen patterns overlap onto solder pads, the ink can interfere with solder wetting during reflow soldering, leading to poor solder joints.
In high-speed PCB design, neglecting solder mask and stack-up can directly impact final performance.
In high-density areas like BGAs or fine-pitch components, the solder mask layer must form a "bridge" between adjacent pads to prevent solder shorts.
While this isn't a "drawing" mistake per se, it's a risk most easily overlooked before the manufacturing process begins.
Design is one thing; manufacturing is another. An excellent R&D engineer not only possesses strong design skills but also has a DFM mindset!
eCloud PCB understands that an engineer's time is precious. Through our cloud platform, we have digitized these complex DFM checking processes. When you upload your Gerber files, the system immediately provides warnings for these common pitfalls, allowing you to make corrections "in real-time."
